On the sea of life they floatedA
Brothers twain in manhood's prideB
And the good ship 'Temperance' bore themC
Safely o'er the stormy tideB
Not a thought of rock or breakerD
Not a fear of wreck had theyE
For their ship was strong and steadyF
Faithful trusty night and dayE
-
-
So they floated on togetherD
Full of youth's elastic joyG
Floated till the air was startledH
With the cry of 'Boat ahoy '-
And they saw a craft beside themC
Dainty jaunty frail and fairI
And its banner showed a wine glassJ
Painted as its symbol thereI
-
-
And again the stranger shoutedA
'Boat ahoy a friend is nearK
Captain of yon gallant vesselL
Do you see and do you hearM
We're the 'Social Glass ' my heartiesJ
And a jolly jovial crewN
We are bound for Pleasure ValleyF
And we would be friends with you '-
-
-
But the brothers stood in silenceJ
Though they could not help but hearM
And the elder's heart was throbbingO
With a vague and chilling fearK
And again the stranger pleadedA
'Come aboard the 'Social Glass'J
We will entertain you warmlyF
And the time will quickly pass '-
-
-
Still the elder stood unheedingO
Still he did not move or turnP
And his mien was cold and haughtyF
And his face was dark and sternP
But the younger whispered to himQ
'Surely we are churls to standR
In this sullen boorish silenceJ
Let us offer friendship's handR
-
-
'See they beckon us to join themC
Beckon us with word and smileS
I will not refuse them longerD
I will join them for a while '-
Then the 'Social Glass' rowed nearerD
And he joined the jovial throngO
And they gathered round about himQ
Greeting him with laugh and songO
-
-
Then the elder cried in anguishT
Loud and wild his accents fellU
'Know you not O brother brotherD
Yonder ship is bound for hellU
See the clouds that hover o'er youN
And the day is growing darkO
There is ruin and destructionV
For each soul upon that barkO
-
-
'Oh come back Why did you leave meF
It is certain death to stayE
Do not loiter do not lingerD
Brother brother come away '-
But the wild winds only answeredW
To his agonizing pleaF
And the 'Social Glass' went boundingO
Lightly o'er the troubled seaF
-
-
He could hear their shouts of laughterD
He could see their goblets shineX
He could see his darling brotherD
With his lips all red with wineX
Ah a seething boiling maelstromY
Lay within their very trackO
And he warned them of their dangerD
And he strove to turn them backO
-
-
But they did not would not heed himQ
On they went in wildest gleeF
Nearer nearer to the whirlpoolZ
Nearer to the boiling seaF
Till the 'Social Glass' was buriedA2
In the seething rushing waveB2
And each mad and wreckless voyagerD
Found a dark and awful graveB2
-
-
And the lonely brother floatedA
Calmly o'er the stormy tideB
For the good ship 'Temperance' bore himQ
Safely o'er the waters wideB
And he never left her shelterD
Till the voyage of life was o'erD
And he anchored where the angelsJ
Waited for him on the shoreC2
