Rhyme Scheme: AA BB CC DD EE FF GG HH II JJ KK LL AA LLYou know that oasis fresh and fair | A |
In the city desert as Greeley square | A |
- | |
That bright triangle of scented bloom | B |
That lies surrounded by grime and gloom | B |
- | |
Right in the breast of the seething town | C |
Like a gleaming gem or a wanton s gown | C |
- | |
Ah wonderful things that tulip bed | D |
Unto my listening soul has said | D |
- | |
Over the rattle and roar of the street | E |
I hear a chorus of voices sweet | E |
- | |
Day and night when I pass that way | F |
And these are the things the voices say | F |
- | |
Here in the heart of the foolish strife | G |
We live a simple and natural life | G |
- | |
Here in the midst of the clash and din | H |
We know what it is to be calm within | H |
- | |
Here environed by sin and shame | I |
We do what we can with our pure white flame | I |
- | |
We do what we can with our bloom and grace | J |
To make the city a fairer place | J |
- | |
It is well to be good though the world is vile | K |
And so through the dust and the smoke we smile | K |
- | |
We are but atoms in chaos tossed | L |
Yet never a purpose for truth was lost | L |
- | |
Ah many a sermon is uttered there | A |
By the bed of blossoms in Greeley square | A |
- | |
And he who listens and hears aright | L |
Is better equipped for the world s hard fight | L |
