The Statue Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDE FFGGHHI JJKKAAL MMNNOOPP

A granite rock in the mountain sideA
Gazed on the world and was satisfiedA
It watched the centuries come and goB
It welcomed the sunlight yet loved the snowB
It grieved when the forest was forced to fallC
Yet joyed when steeples rose white and tallC
In the valley below it and thrilled to hearD
The voice of the great town roaring nearE
-
When the mountain stream from its idle playF
Was caught by the mill wheel and borne awayF
And trained to labour the grey rock musedG
'Trees and verdure and stream are usedG
By Man the Master but I remainH
Friend of the mountain and star and plainH
Unchanged forever by God's decreeI
While passing centuries bow to me '-
-
Then all unwarned with a mighty shockJ
Out of the mountain was wrenched the rockJ
Bruised and battered and broken in heartK
It was carried away to the common martK
Wrecked and ruined in piece and prideA
'Oh God is cruel ' the granite criedA
'Comrade of mountains of stars the friendL
By all deserted how sad my end '-
-
A dreaming sculptor in passing byM
Gazed at the granite with thoughtful eyeM
Then stirred with a purpose supremely grandN
He bade his dream in the rock expandN
And lo from the broken and shapeless massO
That grieved and doubted it came to passO
That a glorious statue of priceless worthP
And infinite beauty adorned the earthP
