The Statue Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDE FFGGHHI JJKKAAL MMNNOOPP| A granite rock in the mountain side | A |
| Gazed on the world and was satisfied | A |
| It watched the centuries come and go | B |
| It welcomed the sunlight yet loved the snow | B |
| It grieved when the forest was forced to fall | C |
| Yet joyed when steeples rose white and tall | C |
| In the valley below it and thrilled to hear | D |
| The voice of the great town roaring near | E |
| - | |
| When the mountain stream from its idle play | F |
| Was caught by the mill wheel and borne away | F |
| And trained to labour the grey rock mused | G |
| 'Trees and verdure and stream are used | G |
| By Man the Master but I remain | H |
| Friend of the mountain and star and plain | H |
| Unchanged forever by God's decree | I |
| While passing centuries bow to me ' | - |
| - | |
| Then all unwarned with a mighty shock | J |
| Out of the mountain was wrenched the rock | J |
| Bruised and battered and broken in heart | K |
| It was carried away to the common mart | K |
| Wrecked and ruined in piece and pride | A |
| 'Oh God is cruel ' the granite cried | A |
| 'Comrade of mountains of stars the friend | L |
| By all deserted how sad my end ' | - |
| - | |
| A dreaming sculptor in passing by | M |
| Gazed at the granite with thoughtful eye | M |
| Then stirred with a purpose supremely grand | N |
| He bade his dream in the rock expand | N |
| And lo from the broken and shapeless mass | O |
| That grieved and doubted it came to pass | O |
| That a glorious statue of priceless worth | P |
| And infinite beauty adorned the earth | P |
