WeA
met at night in the season's hightB
Mid revel and mirth and songC
I looked in your eye with a mute mute cryD
As you elbowed your way through the throngC
-
-
Alone in that crowd of men who bowedE
And flattered and flirted aroundF
Your quick thought guessed the woe in my breastG
And you sprang to my side with a boundF
-
-
In a whisper as faint as a south wind's plaintF
I murmured my need to youH
'A sandwich ' I wailed then your strong eye quailedF
For oh they were thin and fewH
-
-
And about them hustled and pushed and tussledF
A score of desperate menI
But you drew your breath and you hissed ''Sdeath '-
And then you turned back againI
-
-
'Ladye ' you cried with haughty prideF
While your dark eye flashed on meA
'If I risk my life in yon seething strifeJ
What shall my guerdon be '-
-
-
'May I hope for a line that shall be all mineK
A song by the world unheardF
From rivals detested shall the sandwich be wrestedF
If thou wilt but say the word '-
-
-
'If you reach that goal I vow by my soulL
I spoke in a desperate toneM
And I live till that time I will write you a rhymeN
A rhyme to be all your own '-
-
-
'Nay more if you try and in warfare dieF
As sometimes befalls the braveO
In lines of glory I'll wreathe your storyA
And lay them upon your grave '-
-
-
Like a knight of old with an air that was boldF
You turned from my side and wentF
Past salad dish past deviled fishP
Past cake and condimentF
-
-
With a step unswerving and a speed deservingQ
A better reward alackQ
You crossed the room 'neath the red globes' gloomR
Bent on the sandwich's trackQ
-
-
My heart stood still in a nameless chillS
As I saw you stride awayT
For fair girls' smiles and punch bowl's wilesU
Both by your roadside layT
-
-
With the fever fire of hunger direV
I saw you pass them straightF
And I almost wept as your bold hand sweptF
To the waning sandwich plateF
-
-
Then back you came with your cheek aflameW
And the victor's glow in your eyeF
Oh it was grand to see you standF
With the sandwich held on highF
-
-
So here and now I keep my vowX
Tho' the sandwich is no moreY
I would rise from my hearse and write that verseZ
If it were not written beforeY
-
-
EnvoiX
-
Poet we know that many men goQ
Forth on that self same trackQ
With purpose as high to do or dieF
But they bring no sandwich backQ
