Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFG HIJI KLML NOAO PQRQ FSTSIn the great ship Life we speed along | A |
With sails and pennons spread | B |
And tethered beside the great ship glide | C |
The mystic boats for the dead | B |
- | |
Over the deck of the ship of Life | D |
Our loved and lost we lower | E |
And calm and steady his small boat ready | F |
Death silently sits at the oar | G |
- | |
He rows our dead away from our sight | H |
Away from our hearing or ken | I |
We call and cry for a last good bye | J |
But they never come back again | I |
- | |
The ship of Life bounds on and on | K |
The river of Time runs fast | L |
And yet more swift our dear dead drift | M |
For ever back into the Past | L |
- | |
We do not forget those loved and lost | N |
But they fade away like a dream | O |
As we hurry along on the current strong | A |
Of Time's great turbulent stream | O |
- | |
On and on and ever away | P |
Our sails are filled by the wind | Q |
We see new places we meet new faces | R |
And the dead are far behind | Q |
- | |
Their boats have drifted into the sea | F |
That laves God's holy feet | S |
But the river's course too seeks that source | T |
So the ship and the boat shall meet | S |
