The River Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFGGHHIIJJ KKLLM

I am a river flowing from God s seaA
Through devious ways He mapped my course for meA
I cannot change it mine alone the toilB
To keep the waters free from grime and soilB
The winding river ends where it beganC
And when my life had compassed its brief spanC
I must return to that mysterious sourceD
So let me gather daily on my courseD
The perfume from the blossoms as I passE
Balm from the pines and healing from the grassE
And carry down my current as I goF
Not common stones but precious gems to showF
And tears the holy water from sad eyesG
Back to God s sea from which all rivers riseG
Let me convey not blood from wounded heartsH
Nor poison which the upas tree impartsH
When over flowery vales I leap with joyI
Let me not devastate them nor destroyI
But rather leave them fairer to the sightJ
Mine be the lot to comfort and delightJ
And if down awful chasms I needs must leapK
Let me not murmur at my lot but sweepK
On bravely to the end without one fearL
Knowing that He who planned my ways stands nearL
For Love is all and over all AmenM
