AHASUERASA
-
Is this the way to greet thy loving spouseA
But now returned from scenes of blood and strifeB
I pray thee raise thy veil and let me gazeA
Upon that beauty which hath greater powerC
To conquer me than all the arts of warD
-
VASHTIE
-
My beauty Ay my BEAUTY I do holdF
In thy regard no more an honoured placeA
Than yonder marble pillar or the goldF
And jewelled wine cup which thy lips caressA
Thou wouldst degrade me in the people's sightG
-
AHASUERASA
-
Degrade thee Vashti Rather do I seekH
To show my people who are gathered hereI
How as the consort of so fair a queenJ
I feel more pride than as the mighty kingK
For there be many rulers on the earthL
But only ONE such queen Come raise thy veilM
-
VASHTIE
-
Ay only ONE such queen A queen is oneN
Who shares her husband's greatness and his throneO
I am no more than yonder dancing girlP
Who struts and smirks before a royal courtQ
But I will loose my veil and loose my tongueR
Now listen sire my master and my kingK
And let thy princes and the court give earI
'Tis time all heard how Vashti feels her shameS
-
AHASUERASA
-
Shame is no word to couple with thy nameS
Shame and a spotless woman may not meetT
Even in a sentence Choose another wordU
-
VASHTIE
-
Ay SHAME my lord there is no synonymV
That can give voice to my ignoble stateW
To be a thing for eyes to gaze uponX
Yet held an outcast from thy heart and mindY
To hear my beauty praised but not my worthL
To come and go at Pleasure's beck and callZ
While barred from Wisdom's conclaves Think ye THATA2
A noble calling for a noble dameS
Why any concubine amongst thy trainB2
Could play my royal part as well as IC2
Were she as fairD2
-
AHASUERASA
-
Queen Vashti art thou MADE2
I would behead another did he dareD2
To so besmirch thee with comparisonN
-
VASHTI to the courtQ
-
Gaze now your fill Behold Queen Vashti's eyesA
How large they gleam beneath her inch of browF2
How like a great white star her splendid faceA
Shines through the midnight forest of her hairD2
And see the crushed pomegranate of her mouthG2
Observe her arms her throat her gleaming breastsA
Whereon the royal jewels rise and fallZ
And note the crescent curving of her hipsA
And lovely limbs suggested 'neath her robesA
Gaze gaze I say for these have made her queenJ
She hath no mind no heart no dignityE
Worth royal recognition and regardH2
But her fair body approbation meetsA
And whets the sated appetite of kingsA
Now ye have seen what she was bid to showI2
The queen hath played her part and begs to goI2
-
AHASUERASA
-
Ay Vashti go and never more returnJ2
Not only hast thou wronged thine own true lordK2
And mocked and shamed me in the people's eyesA
But thou hast wronged all princes and all menL2
By thy pernicious and rebellious waysA
Queens act and subjects imitate So letM2
Queen Vashti weigh her conduct and her wordsA
Or be no more called 'queen '-
-
VASHTIE
-
I was a princess ere I was a queenJ
And worthy of a better fate than thisA
There lies the crown that made me queen in nameS
Here stands the woman wife in name aloneO
Now no more queen nor wife but woman stillN2
Ay and a woman strong enough to beE
Her own avengerC
