In a land beyond sight or conceivingA
In a land where no blight is no wrongB
No darkness no graves and no grievingA
There lies the great ocean of songB
And its waves oh its waves unbeholdenC
By any save gods and their kindD
Are not blue are not green but are goldenC
Like moonlight and sunlight combinedD
-
It was whispered to me that their watersE
Were made from the gathered up tearsF
That were wept by the sons and the daughtersE
Of long vanished eras and spheresG
Like white sands of heaven the spray isH
That falls all the happy day longB
And whoever it touches straightway isH
Made glad with the spirit of songB
-
Up up to the clouds where their hoaryI
Crowned heads melt away in the skiesJ
The beautiful mountains of gloryI
Each side of the song ocean riseJ
Here day is one splendour of sky lightK
Of God's light with beauty repleteL
Here night is not night but is twilightK
Pervading enfolding and sweetL
-
Bright birds from all climes and all regionsM
That sing the whole glad summer longB
Are dumb till they flock here in legionsM
And lave in the ocean of songB
It is here that the four winds of heavenC
The winds that do sing and rejoiceN
It is here they first came and were givenC
The secret of sound and a voiceN
-
Far down along beautiful beechesN
By night and by glorious dayO
The throng of the gifted ones reachesN
Their foreheads made white with the sprayO
And a few of the sons and the daughtersN
Of this kingdom cloud hidden from sightK
Go down in the wonderful watersN
And bathe in those billows of lightK
-
And their souls evermore are like fountainsN
And liquid and lucent and strongB
High over the tops of the mountainsN
Gush up the sweet billows of songB
No drouth time of waters can dry themP
Whoever has bathed in that seaN
All dangers all deaths they defy themP
And are gladder than gods are with gleeN
