The Night Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFE AGHGIJKJ LMNMOPQPABCB

Oh give me the night the dark dark nightA
The night with never a starB
When the stars are veiled and the moon has sailedC
Beyond the horizon's barB
When thought grows weary of groping its wayD
Through darkness dense and deepE
And buries its head in oblivion's bedF
Wrapped warm in the mantle of sleepE
-
For I hate the night the moon white nightA
The night with a pallid faceG
When a million eyes from the watchful skiesH
Peers into each secret placeG
For thought awakes and the old wound achesI
And Sorrow she cannot restJ
But all night long walks to and froK
Through the aisles of my troubled breastJ
-
And Memory thinks it her royal hourL
When the heavens glitter and shineM
And she fills the cup of the past well upN
With a bitter and scalding wineM
And she calls for a toast to the ghastly ghostO
Of a joy that used to beP
And that terrible face in the dear old moonQ
Stares steadily down at meP
So give me the night the deep dark nightA
The night with never a starB
When the skies are veiled and the moon has sailedC
Beyond the horizon's barB
