The Muse said Let us sing a little songA
Wherein no hint of wrongA
No echo of the great world need or painB
Shall mar the strainB
Lock fast the swinging portal of thy heartC
Keep sympathy apartC
Sing of the sunset of the dawn the seaD
Of any thing or nothing so there beD
No purpose to thy artC
Yea let us make art for Art's sakeE
And sing no more unto the hearts of menF
But for the critic's penF
With songs that are but words sweet sounding wordsG
Like joyous jargon of the birdsG
Tune now thy lyre O Poet and sing onH
Sing ofI
-
THE DAWNJ
-
The Virgin Night all languorous with dreamsK
Of her beloved Darkness rose in fearL
Feeling the presence of another nearL
Outside her curtained casement shone the gleamsK
Of burning orbs and modestly she hidM
Her brow and bosom with her dusky hairN
When lo the bold intruder lurking thereN
Leaped through the fragile lattice all unbidM
And half unveiled her Then the swooning NightM
Fell pale and dead while yet her soul was whiteM
Before that lawless Ravisher the LightM
-
The Muse said Poet nay thou host not caughtM
My meaning For there lurks a thoughtM
Back of thy songA
In art all thought is wrongA
Re string thy lyre and let the echoes boundM
To nothing but sweet soundM
Strike now the chordsO
And sing ofI
-
WORDSG
-
One day sweet Ladye Language gave to meD
A little golden keyD
I sat me down beside her jewel boxP
And turned its locksP
And oh the wealth that lay there in my sightM
Great solitaires of words so bright so brightM
Words that no use can commonize like GodM
And Truth and Love and words of sapphire blueQ
And amber words with sunshine dripping throughQ
And words of that strange hueQ
A pearl reveals upon a wanton's handM
-
Again the MuseR
Thou dost not understandM
A thought within thy song is lingering yetM
Sing but of words all else forget forgetM
Nor let thy words convey one thought to menF
Try once againF
-
Down through the dusk and dew there fell a wordM
Down through the dew and duskS
And all the garments of the air it stirredM
Smelled sweet as muskS
And all the little waves of air it kissedM
Turned cold and amethystM
-
There in the dew and dusk a heart it foundM
There in the dusk and dewQ
The sodden silence changed to fragrant soundM
And all the world seemed newQ
Upon the path that little word had trodM
There shone the smile of GodM
-
The Muse said Drop thy lyreT
I tire I tireU
