The father sits in his lonely roomA
Outside sings a little birdB
But the shadows are laden with death and gloomA
And the song is all unheardB
The father's heart is the home of sorrowC
His breast is the seat of griefD
Who will hunt the paper for him on the morrowC
Who will bring him sweet reliefD
From wearing his thoughts with innocent chatE
Who will find his slippers and bring his hatE
Still the little bird singsF
And flutters her wingsF
The refrain of her song is 'Gos knows bestG
He giveth His little children rest 'H
What can she know of these sorrowful thingsF
-
The mother sits by the desolate hearthI
And weeps o'er a vacant chairJ
Sorrow has taken the place of mirthK
Joy has resigned to despairJ
Bitter the cup the mother is drinkingL
So bitter the tear drops startM
Sad are the thoughts the mother is thinkingL
Oh they will break her heartM
Who will on errands and romp and playN
And mimic the robins the livelong dayN
Still the little bird singsF
And flutters her wingsF
'God reigns in heaven and He will keepO
The dear little children that fall asleep '-
What can she know of these sorrowful thingsF
-
Grandmother sits by the open doorP
And her tears fall down like rainQ
Was there ever a household so sad beforeP
Will it ever be glad agaiinQ
Many unwelcome thoughts come flittingL
Into the granddame's mindR
Who will take up the stitches she drops in knittingL
Who will her snuff box findR
Who'll bring her glasses and wheel her chairJ
And tie her kerchief and comb her hairJ
Still the little bird singsF
And flutters her wingsF
'God above doeth all things wellS
I sang it the same when my nestlings fell '-
Ah this knows the bird of these sorrowful thingsF
