What shall the leader be in that great dayA
When we who sleep and dream that we are slavesB
Shall wake and know that Liberty is oursC
Mark well that word not yours not mine but oursC
For through the mingling of the separate streamsD
Of individual protest and desireE
In one united sea of purpose liesF
The course to FreedomG
-
When Progression takesH
Her undisputed right of way and sinksI
The old traditions and conventions whereJ
They may not rise what shall the leader beK
-
No mighty warrior skilled in crafts of warL
Sowing earth's fertile furrows with dead menM
And staining crimson God's cerulean seaK
To prove his prowess to a shuddering worldN
-
Nor yet a monarch with a silly crownO
Perched on an empty head an in bred heirJ
To senseless titles and anemic bloodP
-
No ruler purchased by the perjured votesQ
Of striving demagogues whose god is goldR
Not one of these shall lead to LibertyK
The weakness of the world cries out for strengthS
The sorrow of the world cries out for hopeT
Its suffering cries for kindnessU
-
He who leadsV
Must then be strong and hopeful as the dawnW
That rises unafraid and full of joyX
Above the blackness of the darkest nightY
He must be kind to every living thingZ
Kind as the Krishna Buddha and the ChristA2
And full of love for all created lifeB2
Oh not in war shall his great prowess lieC2
Nor shall he find his pleasure in the chaseD2
Too great for slaughter friend of man and beastE2
Touching the borders of the Unseen RealmsF2
And bringing down to earth their mystic firesC
To light our troubled pathways wise and kindG2
And human to the core so shall he beK
The coming leader of the coming timeH2
