The Lady And The Dame Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFE GHGHAIJI JBJBGAAA GKJKLMAM CANAAOPO

So thou hast the art good dame thou swearestA
To keep Time's perishing touch at bayB
From the roseate splendor of the cheek so tenderC
And the silver threads from the gold awayB
And the tell tale years that have hurried by usD
Shall tiptoe back and with kind good willE
They shall take their traces from off our facesF
If we will trust to thy magic skillE
-
-
Thou speakest fairly but if I listenG
And buy thy secret and prove its truthH
Hast thou the potion and magic lotionG
To give me also the heart of youthH
With the cheek of rose and the eye of beautyA
And the lustrous locks of life's lost primeI
Wilt thou bring thronging each hope and longingJ
That made the glory of that dead TimeI
-
-
When the sap in the trees sets young buds burstingJ
And the song of the birds fills the air like sprayB
Will rivers of feeling come once more stealingJ
From the beautiful hills of the far awayB
Wilt thou demolish the tower of reasonG
And fling forever down into the dustA
The caution time brought me the lessons life taught meA
And put in their places my old sweet trustA
-
-
If Time's footprint from my brow is drivenG
Canst thou too take with thy subtle powersK
The burden of thinking and let me go drinkingJ
The careless pleasures of youth's bright hoursK
If silver threads from my tresses vanishL
If a glow once more in my pale cheek gleamsM
Wilt thou slay duty and give back the beautyA
Of days untroubled by aught but dreamsM
-
-
When the soft fair arms of the siren SummerC
Encircle the earth in their languorous foldA
Will vast deep oceans of sweet emotionsN
Surge through my veins as they surged of oldA
Canst thou bring back from a day long vanishedA
The leaping pulse and the boundless aimO
I will pay thee double for all thy troubleP
If thou wilt restore all these good dameO
