The Ladder Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCC DDEEFFGG HHIIJKLL MMNNOOPPQQ RR

Unto each mortal who comes to earthA
A ladder is given by God at birthA
And up this ladder the soul must goB
Step by step from the valley belowB
Step by step to the centre of spaceC
On this ladder of lives to the Starting PlaceC
-
In time departed which yet enduresD
I shaped my ladder and you shaped yoursD
Whatever they are they are what we madeE
A ladder of light or a ladder of shadeE
A ladder of love or a hateful thingF
A ladder of strength or a wavering stringF
A ladder of gold or a ladder of strawG
Each is the ladder of righteous lawG
-
We flung them away at the call of deathH
We took them again with the next life breathH
For a keeper stands by the great birth gatesI
As each soul passes its ladder waitsI
Though mine be narrow and yours be broadJ
On my ladder alone can I climb to GodK
On your ladder alone can your feet ascendL
For none may borrow and none may lendL
-
If toil and trouble and pain are foundM
Twisted and corded to form each roundM
If rusted iron or mouldering woodN
Is the fragile frame you must make it goodN
You must build it over and fashion it strongO
Though the task be hard as your life is longO
For up this ladder the pathway leadsP
To earthly pleasures and spirit needsP
And all that may come in another wayQ
Shall be but illusion and will not stayQ
-
In useless effort then waste no timeR
Rebuild your ladder and climb and climbR
