The harsh King Winter sat upon the hillsA
And reigned and ruled the earth right royallyB
He locked the rivers lakes and all the rillsA
I am no puny maudlin king quoth heB
But a stern monarch born to rule and reignC
And I'll show my power to the endD
The summer's flowery retinue I've slainC
And taken the bold free North Wind for my friendD
-
Spring Summer Autumn feeble queens they wereE
With their vast troops of flowers birds and beesA
Soft winds that made the long green grasses stirE
They lost their own identity in things like theseA
I scorn them all nay I defy them allF
And none can wrest the sceptre from my handG
The trusty North Wind answers to my callF
And breathes this icy breath upon the landG
-
The Siren South Wind listening the whileH
Now floated airily across the leaB
Oh King she cried with tender tone and smileH
I come to do all homage unto theeB
In all the sunny region whence I cameI
I find none like thee King so brave and grandG
Thine is a well deserved unrivaled fameI
I kiss in awe dear King thy cold white handG
-
Her words were pleasing and most fair her faceA
He listened wrapt to her soft whispered praiseA
She nestled nearer in her Siren graceA
Dear King she said henceforth my voice shall raiseA
But songs of thy unrivaled splendor LoJ
How white thy brow is How thy garments shineK
I tremble 'neath thy beaming glance for OhJ
Thy wondrous beauty mak'st thee seem divineK
-
The rain King listened in a trance of blissA
To this most sweet voiced Siren from the SouthL
She nestled close and pressed a lingering kissA
Upon the stern white pallor of his mouthL
She hung upon his breast she pressed his cheekM
And he was nothing loth to hold her thereN
While she such tender loving words did speakM
And combed his white locks with her fingers fairN
-
And so she bound him in her Siren wilesA
And stole his strength with every kiss she gaveO
And stabbed him through and through with tender smilesA
And with her tender words she dug his graveO
And then she left him old and weak and blindP
And unlocked all the rivers lakes and rillsA
While the queen Spring with her whole troop behindP
Of flowers and birds and bees came o'er the hillsA
