The Graduates Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBC DDEF AGGHHAAIJIJKLMNAMOPQ QRRBBFF

I saw them beautiful in fair array upon Commencement DayA
Lissome and lovely radiant and sweetB
As cultured roses brought to their estateC
By careful training Finished and completeB
As teachers calculateC
-
They passed in maiden grace along the aisleD
Leaving the chaste white sunlight of a smileD
Upon the gazing throngE
Musing I thought upon their place as mothers of the raceF
-
Oh there are many actors who can playA
Greatly great parts but rare indeed the soulG
Who can be great when cast for some small roleG
Yet that is what the world most needs big heartsH
That will shine forth and glorify poor partsH
In this strange drama Life Do theyA
Who in full dress rehearsal pass to dayA
Before admiring eyes hold in their storeI
Those fine high principles which keep old EarthJ
From being only earth and make men moreI
Than just mere men How will they prove their worthJ
Of years of study Will they walk abroadK
Decked with the plumage of dead bards of GodL
The glorious birds And shall the lamb unbornM
Be slain on altars of their vanityN
To some frail sister who has missed the wayA
Will they give Christ's compassion or man's scornM
And will clean manhood linked with honest loveO
The victor proveP
When riches gained by greed dispute the claimQ
Will they guard well a husband's home and nameQ
Or lean down from their altitudes to hearR
The voice of flattery speak in the earR
Those lying platitudes which men repeatB
To listening Self ConceitB
Musing I thought upon their place as mothers of the raceF
As beautiful they passed in maiden graceF
