The Foolish Elm Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEDE FGHGIJI KDLDEMEM JHNHDLDL OPOPQEJE

The bold young Autumn came riding alongA
One day where an elm tree grewB
'You are fair ' he said as she bent down her headC
'Too fair for your robe's dull hueB
You are far too young for a garb so oldD
Your beauty needs color and sheenE
Oh I would clothe you in scarlet and goldD
Befitting the grace of a queenE
-
-
'For one little kiss on your lips sweet elmF
For one little kiss no moreG
I would give you I swear a robe more fairH
Than ever a princess woreG
One little kiss on those lips my petI
And lo you shall stand I sayJ
Queen of the forest and better yetI
Queen of my heart alway '-
-
-
She tossed her head but he took the kissK
'Tis the way of lovers boldD
And a gorgeous dress for that sweet caressL
He gave ere the morning was oldD
For a week and a day she ruled a queenE
In beauty and splendid attireM
For a week and a day she was loved I weenE
With the love that is born of desireM
-
-
Then bold eyed Autumn went on his wayJ
In search of a tree more fairH
And mob winds tattered her garments and scatteredN
Her finery here and thereH
Poor and faded and ragged and coldD
She rocked in her wild distressL
And longed for the dull green gown she had soldD
For her fickle lover's caressL
-
-
And the days went by and Winter cameO
And his tyrannous tempests beatP
On the shivering tree whose robes of flameO
He had trampled under his feetP
I saw her reach up to the mocking skiesQ
Her poor arms bare and thinE
Ah well a day it is ever the wayJ
With a woman who trades with sinE
