The Duel Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFE GHGHIJKJ LMNMOPQP RSTSUQUQ LVPVWJXYOh many a duel the world has seen | A |
That was bitter with hate that was red with gore | B |
But I sing of a duel by far more cruel | C |
Than ever a poet was sung before | B |
It was waged by night yea by day and by night | D |
With never a pause or halt or rest | E |
And the curious spot where this battle was fought | F |
Was the throbbing heart in a woman s breast | E |
- | |
There met two rivals in deadly strife | G |
And they fought for this woman so pale and proud | H |
One was a man in the prime of his life | G |
And one was a corpse in a moldy shroud | H |
One wrapped in a sheet from his head to his feet | I |
The other one clothed in worldly fashion | J |
But a rival to dread is a man who is dead | K |
If he has been loved in life with passion | J |
- | |
The living lover he battled with sighs | L |
He strove for the woman with words that burned | M |
While stiff and stark lay the corpse in the dark | N |
And silently yearned and yearned and yearned | M |
One spoke of the rapture that life still held | O |
For hearts that yielded to love s desire | P |
And one through the cold grave s earthly mold | Q |
Sent thoughts of a past that were fraught with fire | P |
- | |
The living lover seized hold of her hands | R |
You are mine he cried and we will not part | S |
But she felt the clutch of the dead man s touch | T |
On the tense drawn strings of her aching heart | S |
Yet the touch was of ice and she shrank with fear | U |
Oh the hands of the dead are cold so cold | Q |
And warm were the arms that waited near | U |
To gather her close in their clinging fold | Q |
- | |
And warm was the light in the living eyes | L |
But the eyes of the dead how they stare and stare | V |
With sudden surrender she turned to the tender | P |
And passionate lover who wooed her there | V |
Farewell to sorrow hail sweet to morrow | W |
The battle was over the duel was done | J |
They swooned in the blisses of love s fond kisses | X |
And the dead man stared on in the dark alone | Y |
