The Brave Highland Laddies Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCCDAAD EFEFGGAAAA AHAHEEIAAI JKJKLLMAAM

I had seen our splendid soldiers in their khaki uniformsA
And their leaders with a Sam Brown beltB
I had seen the fighting Britons and Colonials in swarmsA
I had seen the blue clad Frenchmen and I feltB
That the mighty martial showC
Had no new sight to bestowC
Till I walked on Piccadilly and my wordD
By the bonnie Highland laddiesA
In their kilts and their plaidiesA
To a wholly new sensation I was stirredD
-
They were like some old time picture or a scene from out a playE
They were stalwart they were young and debonnairF
Their jaunty little caps they wore in such a fetching wayE
And they showed their handsome legs and didn't careF
And they seemed to own the townG
As they strode on up and downG
Oh they surely were a sight for tired eyesA
Those braw bonnie laddiesA
In their kilts and their plaidiesA
And I stared at them with pleasure and surpriseA
-
I had read about the valour of old Scotland's warrior sonsA
How they fought to a finish or else fellH
I had heard the name bestowed on them by agitated HunsA
Who called these skirted soldiers 'Dames of Hell'H
And I gave them right of wayE
On their London holidayE
As I met them swinging down the street and StrandI
Those bonnie bonnie laddiesA
In their kilts and their plaidiesA
And I breathed a blessing on them and their landI
-
Now the world is all rejoicing that the end of war has comeJ
And no heart is any gladder than my ownK
That the brutal blatant voices of the guns at last are dumbJ
And the Dove of Peace from out her cage has flownK
Yet when men no more march byL
Making pictures for the eyeL
There's a vital dash of colour earth will lackM
When the brave Highland laddiesA
Drop their kilts and their plaidiesA
And return to common clothes of grey or blackM
