The Beautiful Blue Danube Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABACAC DEFEAGAG HIHIAJAJ AKAKLMLM NONOHPHP

They drift down the hall togetherA
He smiles in her lifted eyesB
Like waves of that mighty riverA
The strains of the Danube riseB
They float on its rhythmic measureA
Like leaves on a summer streamC
And here in this scene of pleasureA
I bury my sweet dead dreamC
-
Through the cloud of her dusky tressesD
Like a star shines out her faceE
And the form of his strong arm pressesF
Is sylph like in its graceE
As a leaf on the bounding riverA
Is lost in the seething seaG
I know that for ever and everA
My dream is lost to meG
-
And still the viols are playingH
That grand old wordless rhymeI
And still those two are swayingH
In perfect tune and timeI
If the great bassoons that mutterA
If the clarinets that blowJ
Were given the chance to utterA
The secret things they knowJ
-
Would the lists of the slain who slumberA
On the Danube s battle plainsK
The unknown hosts outnumberA
Who die neath the Danube s strainsK
Those fall where the cannons rattleL
Mid the rain of shot and shellM
But these in a fiercer battleL
Find death in the music s swellM
-
With the river s roar of passionN
Is blended the dying groanO
But here in the halls of fashionN
Hearts break and make no moanO
And the music swelling and sweepingH
Like the river knows it allP
But none are counting or keepingH
The lists of those who fallP
