'What do I hear at the windowA
Did some one call me ' NayB
It was only the wind my darlingC
Grieving the night awayB
Only the wind and the casementA
Talking as two friends mayB
-
'But now I hear some one speakingC
Oh listen and you will hear '-
It is only the night bird callingC
To her mate in sudden fearD
Only the dead leaves fallingC
The last lone leaves of the yearD
-
'But now there is some one comingC
I hear a step on the stair '-
Nay nay it is nothing darlingC
Rest and be free from careE
I have just been out in the hallwayB
I am sure there is no one thereE
-
Never a knock at the doorwayB
Never a step in the hallF
Yet the King is coming comingC
How lightly his footsteps fallF
A sigh and a straightening downwardA
And silence is over allF
