The Actor Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBCDCD EFEFGHGH GDGDIJIJ KILILILI

O man with your wonderful dowerA
O woman with genius and graceB
You can teach the whole world with your powerC
If you are but worthy the placeB
The stage is a force and a factorC
In moulding the thought of the dayD
If only the heart of the actorC
Is high as the theme of the playD
-
No discourse or sermon can reach usE
Through feeling to reason like youF
No author can stir us and teach usE
With lessons as subtle and trueF
Your words and your gestures obeyingG
We weep or rejoice with your partH
And the player behind all his playingG
He ought to be great at his artH
-
No matter what role you are givingG
No matter what skill you betrayD
The everyday life you are livingG
Is certain to colour the playD
The thoughts we call secret and hiddenI
Are creatures of malice in factJ
They steal forth unseen and unbiddenI
And permeate motive and actJ
-
The genius that shines like a cometK
Fills only one part of God s planI
If the lesson the word derives from itL
Is marred by the life of the manI
Be worthy your work if you love itL
The king should be fit for the crownI
Stand high as your art or above itL
And make us look up and not downI
