Rhyme Scheme: ABCCBB ADEEDD FGDDGG HIJJII KLMMLLWhen the Summer sun is shining | A |
And the green things push and grow | B |
Oft my heart runs over measure | C |
With its flowing fount of pleasure | C |
As I feel the sea winds blow | B |
Ah then life is good I know | B |
- | |
And I think of sweet birds building | A |
And of children fair and free | D |
And of glowing sun kissed meadows | E |
And of tender twilight shadows | E |
And of boats upon the sea | D |
Oh then life seems good to me | D |
- | |
Then unbidden and unwanted | F |
Come the darker sadder sights | G |
City shop and stifling alley | D |
Where misfortune's children rally | D |
And the hot crime breeding nights | G |
And the dearth of God's delights | G |
- | |
And I think of narrow prisons | H |
Where unhappy songbirds dwell | I |
And of cruel pens and cages | J |
Where some captured wild thing rages | J |
Like a madman in his cell | I |
In the Zoo the wild beasts' hell | I |
- | |
And I long to lift the burden | K |
Of man's selfishness and sin | L |
And to open wide earth's treasures | M |
Of God's storehouse full of pleasures | M |
For my dumb and human kin | L |
And to ask the whole world in | L |
