When first we met the Sea and IA
Like one before a KingB
I stood in awe nor felt nor sawC
The sun the winds the earth the skyA
Or any other thingB
God's Universe to meD
Was just the SeaD
-
When next we met the lordly MainE
Played but a courtier's partF
Crowned Queen was I and earth and skyA
And sun and sea were my domainE
Since love was in my heartF
Before beyond aboveG
Was only LoveG
-
IIA
-
Love built me on a little rockH
A little house of pineI
At first the SeaD
Beat angrilyD
About that house of mineI
That dear dear home of mineI
-
But when it turned to go awayJ
Beyond the sandy trackK
Down o'er its wallL
The house would callL
Until the Sea came backK
It always hurried backK
-
And now the two have grown so fondM
Oh breathe no word of thisN
When clouds hang lowO
And east winds blowO
They meet and kiss and kissN
At night I hear them kissN
-
IIIA
-
No man can understand the Sea untilP
He knows all passions of the senses allL
The great emotions of the heart and eachQ
Exalted aspiration of the soulR
Then may he sit beside the sea and sayJ
'I too have flung myself against the rocksS
And kissed their flinty brows with no returnT
And fallen spent upon unfeeling sandsU
I too have gone forth yearning to far shoresV
Seeking that something which would bring contentW
And finding only what I took awayJ
And I have looked up through the veil of skiesX
When all the world was still and understoodY
That I am one with Nature and with God '-

-
The Dawn was flying from the NightZ
Swift as the wind she spedA2
Her hair was like a fleece of lightZ
Her cheeks were warm and redA2
-
All passion pale the Night pursuedB2
She fled away awayJ
And in her garments rainbow huedB2
She gained the peak of dayJ
-
And then all shaken with alarmsC2
She leaped down from its crestD2
Into the Sea's uplifted armsC2
And swooned upon his breastD2
