Slain Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFE GHIH JKLK FKMK NOKO PBAB

Hollow a grave where the willows waveA
And lay him under the grassesB
Where the pitying breeze bloweth up from the seasC
And murmurs a chant as it passesB
-
Lay the beautiful face and the form of graceD
Away from the gaze of mortalE
Let us hope that his soul has gained the goalF
Over the shining portalE
-
Hope Ah we thrill with a terrible chillG
Ah pen can you tell the storyH
Of the one who died in his manhood's prideI
Slain in the morn of his gloryH
-
There's a blemish of shame on the dear one's nameJ
For he died as the drunkard diethK
The ruddy wine mug was the fiend who dugL
The grave where our darling liethK
-
O God and his soul was it lost in the bowlF
Has it gone where the wicked goethK
Shall he bear the sin and the tempter go inM
Where the beautiful city glowethK
-
Hush O my heart act well thy partN
Nor question a Father's kindnessO
And strive not to see the thing hid from theeK
By a veil of earthly blindnessO
-
But all through the wine may there shimmer and shineP
As it glimmers and glows in the glassesB
A coffin and grave and the willows that waveA
Over our dead 'neath the grassesB
