I will paint you a sign rumsellerA
And hang it above your doorA
A truer and better signboardB
Than ever you had beforeA
I will paint with the skill of a masterA
And many shall pause to seeC
This wonderful piece of paintingD
So like the realityC
-
-
I will paint yourself rumsellerA
As you wait for that fair young boyE
Just in the morning of manhoodB
A mother's pride and joyE
He has no thought of stoppingD
But you greet him with a smileF
And you seem so blithe and friendlyC
That he pauses to chat awhileF
-
-
I will paint you again rumsellerA
I will paint you as you standB
With a foaming glass of liquorA
Extended in your handB
He wavers but you urge himG
Drink pledge me just this oneH
And he takes the glass and drains itB
And the hellish work is doneH
-
-
And next I will paint a drunkardB
Only a year has flownI
But into that loathsome creatureA
The fair young boy has grownI
The work was sure and rapidB
I will paint him as he liesJ
In a torpid drunken slumberA
Under the wintry skiesJ
-
-
I will paint the form of the motherA
As she kneels at her darling's sideB
Her beautiful boy that was dearerA
Than all the world besideB
I will paint the shape of a coffinK
Labeled with one word 'lost '-
I will paint all this rumsellerA
And will paint it free of costB
-
-
The sin and the shame and the sorrowA
The crime and the want and the woeA
That are born there in your workshopL
No hand can paint you knowA
But I'll paint you a sign rumsellerA
And many shall pause to viewM
This wonderful swinging signboardB
So terribly fearfully trueM
