Returned Birds Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABBA CDDC EFFE GHHG IJJI KLLK JMMJ NJJN OPPOMy heart to day is like a southern wood | A |
Through summer months it has been drunk with heat | B |
And slumbered on unmindful of the beat | B |
Of life beyond it sleep alone seemed good | A |
- | |
Now milder Autumn's tints are in the sky | C |
The fervid heats of summer noons depart | D |
And backward to the old haunts in my heart | D |
The golden robins and the blue birds fly | C |
- | |
I hear the flutter of their airy wings | E |
They flock about the Spring's deserted nest | F |
And suddenly I feel within my breast | F |
The stirring of sweet half forgotten things | E |
- | |
Bright sunny mornings golden growing hours | G |
The building of glad birds among the trees | H |
Wide open windows and the kindly breeze | H |
Bringing the perfume of half open flowers | G |
- | |
A blithe face at the window fair with truth | I |
A mellow laugh that falls like silver spray | J |
Down through the sunlight of the perfect day | J |
Ecstatic hopes that bud with Spring and Youth | I |
- | |
The morning time grew rank with summer blight | K |
The birds flew northward fresher fields to find | L |
And in our hearts we closed the folding blind | L |
While drooping blossoms withered in the light | K |
- | |
The fair face at the window could not stay | J |
The laugh grew weary with a minor strain | M |
That borders on the foreign realm of pain | M |
And hopes that blossomed ripened to decay | J |
- | |
Come happy birds and sing of vanished joy | N |
Of that sweet Spring for ever passed away | J |
No winter lies between us and that day | J |
But what is sadder than the sweets that cloy | N |
- | |
My heart is green with leafage come and wake | O |
The old time echoes with the songs of glee | P |
For only echoes now are left to me | P |
Though bloom and beauty cling to bush and brake | O |
