Retrospection Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEG CHCH IJIJ KLKL MNMN MOMO PQPQ

I look down the lengthening distanceA
Far back to youth's valley of hopeB
How strange seemed the ways of existenceA
How infinite life and its scopeB
-
What dreams what ambitions came throngingC
To people a world of my ownD
How the heart in my bosom was longingC
For pleasures and places unknownD
-
But the hill tops of pleasure and beautyE
Were covered with mist at the dawnF
And only the rugged road DutyE
Shone clear as my feet wandered onG
-
I loved not the path and its leadingC
I hated the rocks and the dustH
But a Voice from the Silence was pleadingC
It spoke but one syllable TrustH
-
I saw as the morning grew olderI
The fair flowered hills of delightJ
And the feet of my comrades grew bolderI
They hurried away from my sightJ
-
And when on the pathway I falteredK
And when I rebelled at my fateL
The Voice with assurance unalteredK
Again spoke one syllable WaitL
-
Along the hard highway I travelledM
And saw with dim vision how soonN
The morning's gold locks were unravelledM
By fingers of amorous noonN
-
A turn in the pathway of dutyM
I stood in the perfect day's primeO
Close close to the hillside of beautyM
The Voice from the Silence said ClimbO
-
The road to the beautiful RegionsP
Lies ever through Duty's hard wayQ
Oh ye who go searching in legionsP
Know this and be patient to dayQ
