Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEG CHCH IJIJ KLKL MNMN MOMO PQPQ| I look down the lengthening distance | A |
| Far back to youth's valley of hope | B |
| How strange seemed the ways of existence | A |
| How infinite life and its scope | B |
| - | |
| What dreams what ambitions came thronging | C |
| To people a world of my own | D |
| How the heart in my bosom was longing | C |
| For pleasures and places unknown | D |
| - | |
| But the hill tops of pleasure and beauty | E |
| Were covered with mist at the dawn | F |
| And only the rugged road Duty | E |
| Shone clear as my feet wandered on | G |
| - | |
| I loved not the path and its leading | C |
| I hated the rocks and the dust | H |
| But a Voice from the Silence was pleading | C |
| It spoke but one syllable Trust | H |
| - | |
| I saw as the morning grew older | I |
| The fair flowered hills of delight | J |
| And the feet of my comrades grew bolder | I |
| They hurried away from my sight | J |
| - | |
| And when on the pathway I faltered | K |
| And when I rebelled at my fate | L |
| The Voice with assurance unaltered | K |
| Again spoke one syllable Wait | L |
| - | |
| Along the hard highway I travelled | M |
| And saw with dim vision how soon | N |
| The morning's gold locks were unravelled | M |
| By fingers of amorous noon | N |
| - | |
| A turn in the pathway of duty | M |
| I stood in the perfect day's prime | O |
| Close close to the hillside of beauty | M |
| The Voice from the Silence said Climb | O |
| - | |
| The road to the beautiful Regions | P |
| Lies ever through Duty's hard way | Q |
| Oh ye who go searching in legions | P |
| Know this and be patient to day | Q |
