He slept as weary toilers doA
She gazed up at the moonB
He stirred and said Wife come to bedC
She answered Soon full soonB
Oh that strange mystery of the dead moon's faceD
-
Her cheek was wan her wistful mouthE
Was lifted like a cupF
The moonful night dripped liquid lightG
She seemed to quaff it upF
Oh that unburied corpse that lies in spaceD
-
Her life had held but drudgeryH
She spelled her Bible thro'H
Of books and lore she knew no moreH
Than little children doA
Oh the weird wonder of that pallid sphereH
-
Her youth had been a loveless wasteI
Starred by no holidayJ
And she had wed for roof and breadC
She gave her work in payJ
Oh the moon memories vague and strange and dearH
-
She drank the night's insidious wineK
And saw another sceneL
A stately room rare flowers in bloomM
Herself in silken sheenL
Oh vast the chambers of the moon and wideN
-
A step drew near a curtain stirredO
She shook with sweet alarmsP
Oh splendid face oh manly graceD
Oh strong impassioned armsP
Oh silent moon what secrets do you hideN
-
The warm red lips of thirsting loveQ
On cheek and brow were pressedR
As the bees know where honeys growH
They sought her mouth her breastR
Oh the dead moon holds many a dead delightG
-
The speaker stirred and gruffly spakeS
Come wife where have you beenT
She whispered low Dear God I goH
But 'tis the seventh sinT
Oh the sad secrets of that orb of whiteG
