Preparation Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFFCEGHIJKLMNO PNQRSTUVWXYZA2B2C2D2 HCE2F2G2H2| We must not force events but rather make | A |
| The heart soil ready for their coming as | B |
| The earth spreads carpets for the feet of Spring | C |
| Or with the strengthening tonic of the frost | D |
| Prepares for Winter Should a July noon | E |
| Burst suddenly upon a frozen world | F |
| Small joy would follow even tho' that world | F |
| Were longing for the Summer Should the sting | C |
| Of sharp December pierce the heart of June | E |
| What death and devastation would ensue | G |
| All things are planned The most majestic sphere | H |
| That whirls through space is governed and controlled | I |
| By supreme law as is the blade of grass | J |
| Which through the bursting bosom of the earth | K |
| Creeps up to kiss the light Poor puny man | L |
| Alone doth strive and battle with the Force | M |
| Which rules all lives and worlds and he alone | N |
| Demands effect before producing cause | O |
| - | |
| How vain the hope We cannot harvest joy | P |
| Until we sow the seed and God alone | N |
| Knows when that seed has ripened Oft we stand | Q |
| And watch the ground with anxious brooding eyes | R |
| Complaining of the slow unfruitful yield | S |
| Not knowing that the shadow of ourselves | T |
| Keeps off the sunlight and delays result | U |
| Sometimes our fierce impatience of desire | V |
| Doth like a sultry May force tender shoots | W |
| Of half formed pleasures and unshaped events | X |
| To ripen prematurely and we reap | Y |
| But disappointment or we rot the germs | Z |
| With briny tears ere they have time to grow | A2 |
| While stars are born and mighty planets die | B2 |
| And hissing comets scorch the brow of space | C2 |
| The Universe keeps its eternal calm | D2 |
| Through patient preparation year on year | H |
| The earth endures the travail of the Spring | C |
| And Winter's desolation So our souls | E2 |
| In grand submission to a higher law | F2 |
| Should move serene through all the ills of life | G2 |
| Believing them masked joys | H2 |
