Prayer Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DEDEAA FGFGHH DGDGII JKJKLM NONOPP

I do not undertake to sayA
That literal answers come from HeavenB
But I know this that when I prayA
A comfort a support is givenB
That helps me rise o'er earthly thingsC
As larks soar up on airy wingsC
-
In vain the wise philosopherD
Points out to me my fabric's flawsE
In vain the scientists averD
That all things are controlled by lawsE
My life has taught me day by dayA
That it availeth much to prayA
-
I do not stop to reason outF
The why and how I do not careG
Since I know this that when I doubtF
Life seems a blackness of despairG
The world a tomb and when I trustH
Sweet blossoms spring up in the dustH
-
Since I know in the darkest hourD
If I lift up my soul in prayerG
Some sympathetic loving PowerD
Sends hope and comfort to me thereG
Since balm is sent to ease my painI
What need to argue or explainI
-
Prayer has a sweet refining graceJ
It educates the soul and heartK
It lends a lustre to the faceJ
And by its elevating artK
It gives the mind an inner sightL
That brings it near the InfiniteM
-
From our gross selves it helps us riseN
To something which we yet may beO
And so I ask not to be wiseN
If thus my faith is lost to meO
Faith that with angel's voice and touchP
Says Pray for prayer availeth muchP
