Plea To Science Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFGFAHAH EIGIJKJJ LMLMKNKN OKOKPFPF

O Science reaching backward through the distanceA
Most earnest child of GodB
Exposing all the secrets of existenceA
With thy divining rodB
I bid thee speed up to the heights supernalC
Clear thinker ne'er sufficedD
Go seek and bind the laws and truths eternalC
But leave me ChristD
-
Upon the vanity of pious sagesE
Let in the light of dayF
Break down the superstitions of all agesG
Thrust bigotry awayF
Stride on and bid all stubborn foes defianceA
Let Truth and Reason reignH
But I beseech thee O Immortal ScienceA
Let Christ remainH
-
What canst thou give to help me bear my crossesE
In place of Him my LordI
And what to recompense for all my lossesG
And bring me sweet rewardI
THOU couldst not with thy clear cold eyes of reasonJ
Thou couldst not comfort meK
Like One who passed through that tear blotted seasonJ
In sad GethsemaneJ
-
Through all the weary wearing hour of sorrowL
What word that thou hast saidM
Would make me strong to wait for some to morrowL
When I should find my deadM
When I am weak and desolate and lonelyK
And prone to follow wrongN
Not thou O Science Christ my Saviour onlyK
Can make me strongN
-
Thou art so cold so lofty and so distantO
Though great my need might beK
No prayer however constant and persistentO
Could bring thee down to meK
Christ stands so near to help me through each hourP
To guide me day by dayF
O Science sweeping all before thy powerP
Leave Christ I prayF
