Over the banisters bends a faceA
Daringly sweet and beguilingB
Somebody stands in careless graceA
And watching the picture smilingB

The light burns dim in the hall belowC
Nobody sees her standingB
Saying good night again soft and lowC
Halfway up to the landingB

Nobody only the eyes of brownD
Tender and full of meaningB
That smile on the fairest face in townD
Over the banisters leaningB

Tired and sleepy with drooping headE
I wonder why she lingersF
Now when the good nights all are saidE
Why somebody holds her fingersF

He holds her fingers and draws her downD
Suddenly growing bolderG
Till the loose hair drops its masses brownD
Like a mantle over his shoulderG

Over the banisters soft hands fairH
Brush his cheeks like a featherG
And bright brown tresses and dusky hairH
Meet and mingle togetherG
-
There's a question asked there's a swift caressI
She has flown like a bird from the hallwayJ
But over the banisters drops a YesI
That shall brighten the world for him alwayJ
