Here in my office I sit and writeA
Hour on hour and day on dayB
With no one to speak to from morn till nightA
Though I have a neighbour just over the wayB
Across the alley that yawns betweenC
A maiden sits sewing the whole day longD
A face more lovely is seldom seenC
In hall or castle or country throngD
-
Her curling tresses are golden brownE
Her eyes I think are violet blueF
Though her long thick lashes are always downE
Jealously hiding the orbs from viewF
Her neck is slender and round and whiteA
And this way and that way her soft hair blowsG
As there in the window from morn till nightA
She sits in her beauty and sings and sewsG
-
And I in my office chair lounge and dreamH
In an idle way of a sweet 'might be '-
While the maid at her window sews her seamH
With never a glance or a thought for meI
Perhaps she is angry because I lookJ
So long and so often across the wayB
Over the top of my ledger bookJ
But those stolen glances brighten the dayB
-
And I am blameless of any wrongD
She is the transgressor by sitting thereK
And making my eyes turn oft and longD
To a face so delicate pure and fairK
Work is forgotten the page lies cleanC
Untouched by the pen while hours go byL
Oh maid of the pensive air and mienC
Give me one glance of your violet eyeL
-
Drop your thimble or spool of threadM
Down in the alley I pray my sweetN
Or the comb or ribbon from that fair headM
That I may follow with nimble feetN
For how can I tell you my heart has goneO
Across the alley and lingers thereK
Till I know your name my beautiful oneP
How could I venture and how could I dareK
-
Just one day longer I'll wait and dreamH
And then if you grant me no other wayB
I shall write you a letter 'Maid of the seamH
You have stolen my property now give payB
Beautiful robber and charming thiefQ
Give me one glance for the deed you've done '-
Thus shall I tell you my loss and griefQ
Over the alley my beautiful oneP
