A maiden sat in teh sunset glowA
Of the shadowy beautiful Long AgoA
That we see through a mist of tearsB
She sat and dreamed with lips apartC
With thoughtful eyes and a beating heartC
Of the mystical future yearsD
And brighter far than the sunset skiesE
Was the vision seen by the maiden's eyesE
-
There were castles built of the summer airF
And beautiful voices were singing thereF
In a soft and floating strainG
There were skies of azure and fields of greenH
With never a cloud to come betweenH
And never a thought of painG
There was the music sweet as the silvery notesI
That flow from a score of thrushes' throatsI
-
There were hands to clasp with a loving holdJ
There were lips to kiss and eyes that toldJ
More than the lips could sayK
And all the faces she loved were thereF
With their snowy brows untouched by careF
And locks that were never greyK
And Love was the melody each heart beatL
And the beautiful vision was all completeL
-
But the castles built of the summer windM
I have vainly sought I only findM
Shadows all grim and coldJ
For I was the maiden who thought to seeN
Into the future years Ah meN
And I am grey and oldJ
My dream of earth was as fair and brightO
As my hope of heaven is to nightO
-
Dreams are but dreams at the very bestP
And the friends I loved lay down to restP
With their faces hid awayK
They had furrowed brows and snowy hairF
And they willing laid one dayK
A shadow came over my vision sceneH
As the clouds of sorrow came in betweenH
-
The hands that I thought to clasp are crossedQ
The lips and the beautiful eyes are lostQ
And I seek them all in vainG
The gushes of melody sweet and clearR
And the floating voices I do not hearS
But only a sob of painG
And the beating hearts have paused to restP
Ah dreams are but dreams at the very bestP
