A maiden sat in teh sunset glow	A
Of the shadowy beautiful Long Ago	A
That we see through a mist of tears	B
She sat and dreamed with lips apart	C
With thoughtful eyes and a beating heart	C
Of the mystical future years	D
And brighter far than the sunset skies	E
Was the vision seen by the maiden's eyes	E
	-
There were castles built of the summer air	F
And beautiful voices were singing there	F
In a soft and floating strain	G
There were skies of azure and fields of green	H
With never a cloud to come between	H
And never a thought of pain	G
There was the music sweet as the silvery notes	I
That flow from a score of thrushes' throats	I
	-
There were hands to clasp with a loving hold	J
There were lips to kiss and eyes that told	J
More than the lips could say	K
And all the faces she loved were there	F
With their snowy brows untouched by care	F
And locks that were never grey	K
And Love was the melody each heart beat	L
And the beautiful vision was all complete	L
	-
But the castles built of the summer wind	M
I have vainly sought I only find	M
Shadows all grim and cold	J
For I was the maiden who thought to see	N
Into the future years Ah me	N
And I am grey and old	J
My dream of earth was as fair and bright	O
As my hope of heaven is to night	O
	-
Dreams are but dreams at the very best	P
And the friends I loved lay down to rest	P
With their faces hid away	K
They had furrowed brows and snowy hair	F
And they willing laid one day	K
A shadow came over my vision scene	H
As the clouds of sorrow came in between	H
	-
The hands that I thought to clasp are crossed	Q
The lips and the beautiful eyes are lost	Q
And I seek them all in vain	G
The gushes of melody sweet and clear	R
And the floating voices I do not hear	S
But only a sob of pain	G
And the beating hearts have paused to rest	P
Ah dreams are but dreams at the very best	P
