Old And New Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCE FGFG HAHA IJIJ

Long have the poets vaunted in their laysA
Old times old loves old friendships and old wineB
Why should the old monopolise all praiseA
Then let the new claim mineB
-
Give me strong new friends when the old prove weakC
Or fail me in my darkest hour of needD
Why perish with the ship that springs a leakC
Or lean upon a readE
-
Give me new love warm palpitating sweetF
When all the grace and beauty leaves the oldG
When like a rose it withers at my feetF
Or like a hearth grows coldG
-
Give me new times bright with a prosperous cheerH
In place of old tear blotted burdened daysA
I hold a sunlit present far more dearH
And worthy of my praiseA
-
When the old creeds are threadbare and worn throughI
And all too narrow for the broadening soulJ
Give me the fine firm texture of the newI
Fair beautiful and wholeJ
