Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGHGH IJIJKLKL MNMNOPOP AQAQABABWhen with clanging and with ringing | A |
Comes the year's initial day | B |
I can feel the rhythmic swinging | A |
Of the world upon its way | B |
And though Right still wears a fetter | C |
And though Justice still is blind | D |
Time's beyond is always better | C |
Than the paths he leaves behind | D |
- | |
In our eons of existence | E |
As we circle through the night | F |
We annihilate the distance | E |
'Twixt the darkness and the light | F |
From beginnings crude and lowly | G |
Round and round our souls have trod | H |
Through the circles winding slowly | G |
Up to knowledge and to God | H |
- | |
With each century departed | I |
Some old evil found a tomb | J |
Some old truth was newly started | I |
In propitious soil to bloom | J |
With each epoch some condition | K |
That has handicapped the race | L |
Worn out creed or superstition | K |
Unto knowledge yields its place | L |
- | |
Though in folly and in blindness | M |
And in sorrow still we grope | N |
Yet in man's increasing kindness | M |
Lies the world's stupendous hope | N |
For our darkest hour of errors | O |
Is as radiant as the dawn | P |
Set beside the awful terrors | O |
Of the ages that have gone | P |
- | |
And above the sad world's sobbing | A |
And the strife of clan with clan | Q |
I can hear the mighty throbbing | A |
Of the heart of God in man | Q |
And a voice chants through the chiming | A |
Of the bells and seems to say | B |
We are climbing we are climbing | A |
As we circle on our way | B |
