New Year's Day Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGHGH IJIJKLKL MNMNOPOP AQAQABAB

When with clanging and with ringingA
Comes the year's initial dayB
I can feel the rhythmic swingingA
Of the world upon its wayB
And though Right still wears a fetterC
And though Justice still is blindD
Time's beyond is always betterC
Than the paths he leaves behindD
-
In our eons of existenceE
As we circle through the nightF
We annihilate the distanceE
'Twixt the darkness and the lightF
From beginnings crude and lowlyG
Round and round our souls have trodH
Through the circles winding slowlyG
Up to knowledge and to GodH
-
With each century departedI
Some old evil found a tombJ
Some old truth was newly startedI
In propitious soil to bloomJ
With each epoch some conditionK
That has handicapped the raceL
Worn out creed or superstitionK
Unto knowledge yields its placeL
-
Though in folly and in blindnessM
And in sorrow still we gropeN
Yet in man's increasing kindnessM
Lies the world's stupendous hopeN
For our darkest hour of errorsO
Is as radiant as the dawnP
Set beside the awful terrorsO
Of the ages that have goneP
-
And above the sad world's sobbingA
And the strife of clan with clanQ
I can hear the mighty throbbingA
Of the heart of God in manQ
And a voice chants through the chimingA
Of the bells and seems to sayB
We are climbing we are climbingA
As we circle on our wayB
