Rhyme Scheme: ABCCADCD CEFEAGHG ICICAJKJ CLCLAMNM OHOHAPQP KNCR

If I could clasp my little babeA
Upon my breast to nightB
I would not mind the blowing windC
That shrieketh in affrightC
Oh my lost babe my little babeA
My babe with dreamful eyesD
Thy bed is cold and night wind boldC
Shrieks woeful lullabiesD
-
My breast is softer than the sodC
This room with lighter hearthE
Is better place for thy sweet faceF
Than frozen mother eatrthE
Oh my babe oh my lost babeA
Oh babe with waxen handsG
I want thee so I need thee soH
Come from thy mystic landsG
-
No love that like a mother's fillsI
Each corner of the heartC
No loss like hers that rends and chillsI
And tears the soul apartC
Oh babe my babe my helpless babeA
I miss thy little formJ
Would I might creep where thou dost sleepK
And clasp thee through the stormJ
-
I hold thy pillow to my breastC
To bring a vague reliefL
I sing the songs that soothed thy restC
Ah me no cheating griefL
My breathing babe my sobbing babeA
I miss thy plaintive moanM
I cannot hear thou art not nearN
My little one my ownM
-
Thy father sleeps He mourns thy lossO
But little fathers knowH
The pain that makes a mother tossO
Through sleepless nights of woeH
My clinging babe my nursing babeA
What knows thy father manP
How my breasts miss thy lips' soft kissQ
None but a mother canP
-
Worn out I sleep I wake I weepK
I sleep hush hush my dearN
Sweet lamb fear not Oh God I thoughtC
I thought my babe was hereR
