Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCDEFEFGHGH| Let me to day do something that shall take | A |
| A little sadness from the world s vast store | B |
| And may I be so favoured as to make | A |
| Of joy s too scanty sum a little more | B |
| Let me not hurt by any selfish deed | C |
| Or thoughtless word the heart of foe or friend | D |
| Nor would I pass unseeing worthy need | C |
| Or sin by silence when I should defend | D |
| However meagre be my worldly wealth | E |
| Let me give something that shall aid my kind | F |
| A word of courage or a thought of health | E |
| Dropped as I pass for troubled hearts to find | F |
| Let me to night look back across the span | G |
| Twixt dawn and dark and to my conscience say | H |
| Because of some good act to beast or man | G |
| The world is better that I lived today | H |
