Though with gods the world is cumberedA
Gods unnamed and gods unnumberedA
Never god was known to beB
Who had not his devoteeB
So I dedicate to mineC
Here in verse my temple shrineC
-
'Tis not Ares mighty MarsD
Who can give success in warsE
'Tis not Morpheus who doth keepF
Guard above us while we sleepF
'Tis not Venus she whose dutyB
'Tis to give us love and beautyB
Hail to these and others afterG
Momus gleesome god of laughterG
-
Quirinus would guard my healthH
Plutus would insure me wealthH
Mercury looks after tradeA
Hera smiles on youth and maidA
All are kind I own their worthI
After Momus god of mirthI
-
Though Apollo out of spiteA
Hides away his face of lightA
Though Minerva looks askanceJ
Deigning me no smiling glanceJ
Kings and queens may envy meB
While I claim the god of gleeB
-
Wisdom wearies Love has wingsK
Wealth makes burdens Pleasure stingsK
Glory proves a thorny crownL
So all gifts the gods throw downL
Bring their pains and troubles afterG
All save Momus god of laughterG
He alone gives constant joyM
Hail to Momus happy boyM
