Mirage Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGHGH BIBICJCJ BKBKBLBL MFMF

When the beautiful mountain ash is turningA
As lovely a sight as the eyes desireB
When the leaves of the sumac bush are burningA
Like the steady flame of a winter fireB
When the weeds by the roadside all grow goldenC
When maples are glowing and asters gleamD
It is then that the new is changed to the oldenC
And back to my heart comes the past like a dreamD
-
Like a mirage I see the blue haze o'er meE
The City of Youth that I left behindF
Oh whitely its turrets are gleaming before meE
And out of the window lean faces kindF
And I hear the echo of jubilant voicesG
There are cheeks of beauty and eyes of truthH
And every pulse in my heart rejoicesG
There's no other place like the City of YouthH
-
And lo the City is full of splendourB
And a voice in my soul breaks into songI
Yes a passionate love as fair as tenderB
Creeps out of the grave where it slept so longI
As the strings of a harp by winds are shakenC
To endless music my heart is stirredJ
When my name is breathed and my hand is takenC
Though I cannot utter a single wordJ
-
But with souls that are full of the beautiful weatherB
And the perfect peace that has no nameK
Under the autumn skies togetherB
We stray by the sumacs all aflameK
And the forest flushes to fuller gloryB
Brighter glow asters and golden rodL
As eye unto eye tells the old old storyB
And the sunlight seems like the smile of GodL
-
Alone I stand and sorrowful heartedM
The dead leaves fall in the chilly windF
The mirage is fled and the glory departedM
And the City of Youth is far behindF
