Rhyme Scheme: AABCBDEFEGGHIJKLMNNM NOPOQRFRSEN EETTJUVUWPX NYPY ZQB PDYDA2NAThe devil to Bacchus said one day | A |
In a scowling growling petulant way | A |
As he came from earth to hell | B |
'There's a soul above that I cannot move | C |
And I've struggled long and well | B |
He's a manly youth with an eye of truth | D |
A fellow of matchless grace | E |
And he looks me through with his eye of blue | F |
Till I cower before his face | E |
The very power and strength of heaven | G |
To this young fearless soul were given | G |
For I've never an art that can reach his heart | H |
And I cannot snare his feet | I |
I have wasted days in devising ways | J |
And now must cry 'Defeat '' | K |
And the devil scowled and grumbled and growled | L |
And beat about with his cane | M |
Till the demons fled over the burning waste | N |
Out of his reach in hurrying haste | N |
Howling aloud in pain | M |
- | |
- | |
Bacchus laughed as he stooped and quaffed | N |
A burning bumper of wine | O |
'Why master ' said he 'you soon shall see | P |
The fellow down at your shrine | O |
Long ago if you'd let me know | Q |
We'd had him in our ranks | R |
And now adieu while I work for you | F |
Don't hurry about your thanks | R |
I'm going above you know they love | S |
The sight of my glowing face | E |
They call me a god ho ho how odd | N |
With this for my dwelling place ' | - |
A youth with a dower of manly grace | E |
A maid with the morning in her face | E |
And she filleth a goblet full to the brim | T |
And giveth the bubbling draught to him | T |
'Drink ' she says and the goblet sways | J |
And shimmers under his eyes | U |
He tries to speak but the tongue is weak | V |
And the words sink into sighs | U |
For the maid is fair and she holds him there | W |
With a spell that he cannot flee | P |
'Drink ' and she sips with her ruby lips | X |
'Drink but a draught with me ' | - |
And the lovers quaffed while the demons laughed | N |
And Bacchus laughed loud and long | Y |
'Ho ho ' cried he 'what a victory | P |
Ho ho for the soul so strong | Y |
That my master was beat and cried 'Defeat ' | - |
But wine is a tempter and love is sweet ' | - |
- | |
- | |
Bacchus went back o'er the fiery track | Z |
Into the land below | Q |
And the devil said 'Well what have you to tell | B |
Of the thing I want to know ' | - |
And Bacchus said he 'Why look and see | P |
There is your strong brave youth | D |
Reeling along with a drunken song | Y |
Staining those lips of truth | D |
My work is done You must go on | A2 |
And finish the job I started | N |
And as long as I stay in your service pray | A |
Don't ever be down hearted ' | - |
