The devil to Bacchus said one dayA
In a scowling growling petulant wayA
As he came from earth to hellB
'There's a soul above that I cannot moveC
And I've struggled long and wellB
He's a manly youth with an eye of truthD
A fellow of matchless graceE
And he looks me through with his eye of blueF
Till I cower before his faceE
The very power and strength of heavenG
To this young fearless soul were givenG
For I've never an art that can reach his heartH
And I cannot snare his feetI
I have wasted days in devising waysJ
And now must cry 'Defeat ''K
And the devil scowled and grumbled and growledL
And beat about with his caneM
Till the demons fled over the burning wasteN
Out of his reach in hurrying hasteN
Howling aloud in painM
-
-
Bacchus laughed as he stooped and quaffedN
A burning bumper of wineO
'Why master ' said he 'you soon shall seeP
The fellow down at your shrineO
Long ago if you'd let me knowQ
We'd had him in our ranksR
And now adieu while I work for youF
Don't hurry about your thanksR
I'm going above you know they loveS
The sight of my glowing faceE
They call me a god ho ho how oddN
With this for my dwelling place '-
A youth with a dower of manly graceE
A maid with the morning in her faceE
And she filleth a goblet full to the brimT
And giveth the bubbling draught to himT
'Drink ' she says and the goblet swaysJ
And shimmers under his eyesU
He tries to speak but the tongue is weakV
And the words sink into sighsU
For the maid is fair and she holds him thereW
With a spell that he cannot fleeP
'Drink ' and she sips with her ruby lipsX
'Drink but a draught with me '-
And the lovers quaffed while the demons laughedN
And Bacchus laughed loud and longY
'Ho ho ' cried he 'what a victoryP
Ho ho for the soul so strongY
That my master was beat and cried 'Defeat '-
But wine is a tempter and love is sweet '-
-
-
Bacchus went back o'er the fiery trackZ
Into the land belowQ
And the devil said 'Well what have you to tellB
Of the thing I want to know '-
And Bacchus said he 'Why look and seeP
There is your strong brave youthD
Reeling along with a drunken songY
Staining those lips of truthD
My work is done You must go onA2
And finish the job I startedN
And as long as I stay in your service prayA
Don't ever be down hearted '-
