You left me with the autumn timeA
When the winter stripped the forest bareB
Then dressed it in his spotless rimeA
When frosts were lurking in the airB
You left me here and went awayC
The winds were cold you could not stayC
-
You sought a warmer clime untilD
The south wind artful maid should breakE
The winter's trumpets and should fillD
The air with songs of birds and wakeE
The sleeping blossoms on the plainF
And make the brooks to flow againG
-
I thought that the winter desolateH
And all times felt a sense of lossI
I taught my longing heart to waitJ
And said 'When Spring shall come acrossI
The hills with blossoms in her trackK
The she our loved one will come back '-
-
And now the hills with grass and mossI
The spring with cunning hands has spreadL
And yet I feel my grievous lossI
My heart will not be comfortedM
But crieth daily 'Where is sheN
You promised should come back to me '-
-
Oh love where are you day by dayC
I seek to find you but in vainF
Men point me to a grave and sayC
'There is her bed upon the plain '-
But though I see no trace of youO
I cannot thiink their words are trueO
-
You were too sweet to wholly passP
Away from earth and leave no traceQ
You were to fair to let the grassP
Grow rank and tall above your faceQ
Your voice that mocked the robin's trillD
I cannot think is hushed and stillD
-
I thought I saw your golden hairB
One day and reached to touch a strandR
I found but yellow sunbeams thereB
The bright rays fell aslant my handR
And seemed to mock with lights and shadesS
The silken meshes of your braidsS
-
Again I thought I saw your handR
Wave as if beckoning to meN
I found 'twas but a lily fannedR
By the cool zephyrs from the seaN
Oh love I find no trace of youO
I wonder if their words were trueO
-
One day I heard a singing voiceT
A burst of music trill on trillD
It made my very soul rejoiceT
My heart gave and exultant thrillD
I cried 'Oh heart we've found her hush '-
But no 'twas the silver throated thrushU
-
And once I thought I saw your faceQ
And wild with joy I ran to youO
But found when I had reached the placeQ
'Twas a blush rose bathed in dewO
Ah love I think you must be deadL
And I believe the words they saidL
