Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DEDEFG HIJIK ILIMN CFC OO PQPQDD BRBRSS RNRNOO TDTD U QOQOLLYou left me with the autumn time | A |
When the winter stripped the forest bare | B |
Then dressed it in his spotless rime | A |
When frosts were lurking in the air | B |
You left me here and went away | C |
The winds were cold you could not stay | C |
- | |
You sought a warmer clime until | D |
The south wind artful maid should break | E |
The winter's trumpets and should fill | D |
The air with songs of birds and wake | E |
The sleeping blossoms on the plain | F |
And make the brooks to flow again | G |
- | |
I thought that the winter desolate | H |
And all times felt a sense of loss | I |
I taught my longing heart to wait | J |
And said 'When Spring shall come across | I |
The hills with blossoms in her track | K |
The she our loved one will come back ' | - |
- | |
And now the hills with grass and moss | I |
The spring with cunning hands has spread | L |
And yet I feel my grievous loss | I |
My heart will not be comforted | M |
But crieth daily 'Where is she | N |
You promised should come back to me ' | - |
- | |
Oh love where are you day by day | C |
I seek to find you but in vain | F |
Men point me to a grave and say | C |
'There is her bed upon the plain ' | - |
But though I see no trace of you | O |
I cannot thiink their words are true | O |
- | |
You were too sweet to wholly pass | P |
Away from earth and leave no trace | Q |
You were to fair to let the grass | P |
Grow rank and tall above your face | Q |
Your voice that mocked the robin's trill | D |
I cannot think is hushed and still | D |
- | |
I thought I saw your golden hair | B |
One day and reached to touch a strand | R |
I found but yellow sunbeams there | B |
The bright rays fell aslant my hand | R |
And seemed to mock with lights and shades | S |
The silken meshes of your braids | S |
- | |
Again I thought I saw your hand | R |
Wave as if beckoning to me | N |
I found 'twas but a lily fanned | R |
By the cool zephyrs from the sea | N |
Oh love I find no trace of you | O |
I wonder if their words were true | O |
- | |
One day I heard a singing voice | T |
A burst of music trill on trill | D |
It made my very soul rejoice | T |
My heart gave and exultant thrill | D |
I cried 'Oh heart we've found her hush ' | - |
But no 'twas the silver throated thrush | U |
- | |
And once I thought I saw your face | Q |
And wild with joy I ran to you | O |
But found when I had reached the place | Q |
'Twas a blush rose bathed in dew | O |
Ah love I think you must be dead | L |
And I believe the words they said | L |
