Toward even when the day leans downA
To kiss the upturned face of nightB
Out just beyond the loud voiced townA
I know a spot of calm delightB
Like crimson arrows from a quiverC
The red rays pierce the water flowingD
While we go dreaming singing rowingD
To Leudeman's on the RiverC
-
The hills like some glad mocking birdE
Send back our laughter and our singingD
While faint and yet more faint is heardE
The steeple bells all sweetly ringingD
Some message did the winds deliverC
To each glad heart that August nightB
All heard but all heard not arightB
By Leudeman's on the RiverC
-
Night falls as in some foreign climeF
Between the hills that slope and riseG
So dusk the shades at landing timeF
We could not see each other's eyesG
We only saw the moonbeams quiverC
Far down upon the stream that nightB
The new moon gave but little lightB
By Leudeman's on the RiverC
-
How dusky were those paths that ledB
Up from the river to the hallH
The tall trees branching overheadB
Invite the early shades that fallH
In all the glad blithe world oh neverC
Were hearts more free from care than whenI
We wandered through those walks we tenI
By Leudeman's on the RiverC
-
So soon so soon the changes cameF
This August day we two aloneJ
On that same river not the sameF
Dream of a night forever flownJ
Strange distances have come to severC
The hearts that gayly beat in pleasureC
Long miles we cannot cross or measureC
From Leudeman's on the RiverC
-
We'll pluck two leaves dear friend to dayB
The green the russet seems it strangeK
So soon so soon the leaves can changeK
Ah me so runs all night awayB
This night wind chills me and I shiverC
The summer time is almost pastB
One more good bye perhaps the lastB
To Leudeman's on the RiverC
