La Mort D'amour Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

When was it that love died We were so fondA
So very fond a little while agoB
With leaping pulses and blood all aglowB
We dreamed about a sweeter life beyondA
-
When we should dwell together as one heartC
And scarce could wait that happy time to comeD
Now side by side we sit with lips quite dumbD
And feel ourselves a thousand miles apartC
-
How was it that love died I do not knowB
I only know that all its grace untoldE
Has faded into gray I miss the goldE
From our dull skies but did not see it goB
-
Why should love die We prized it I am sureF
We thought of nothing else when it was oursG
We cherished it in smiling sunlit bowersG
It was our all why could it not endureF
-
Alas we know not how or when or whyH
This dear thing died We only know it wentI
And left us dull cold and indifferentJ
We who found heaven once in each other's sighH
-
How pitiful it is and yet how trueK
That half the lovers in the world one dayL
Look questioning in each other's eyes this wayL
And know love's gone forever as we doK
-
Sometimes I cannot help but think dear heartC
As I look out o'er all the wide sad earthM
And see love's flame gone out on many a hearthN
That those who would keep love must dwell apartC
