It Might Have Been Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAC DEDE FGHG IJIJ

We will be what we could be Do not sayA
It might have been had not or that or thisB
No fate can keep us from the chosen wayA
He only might who isC
-
We will do what we could do Do not dreamD
Chance leaves a hero all uncrowned to grieveE
I hold all men are greatly what they seemD
He does who could achieveE
-
We will climb where we could climb Tell me notF
Of adverse storms that kept thee from the heightG
What eagle ever missed the peak he soughtH
He always climbs who mightG
-
I do not like the phrase It might have beenI
It lacks all force and life's best truths pervertsJ
For I believe we have and reach and winI
Whatever our desertsJ
