By slow self conquest comradeship with pain | B |
And patient seeking after higher truths | C |
We cannot follow our own wayward wills | D |
And feed our baser appetites and give | E |
Loose reins to foolish tempers year on year | F |
And then cry 'Lord forgive me I believe ' | G |
And straightway bathe in glory Men must learn | H |
God's system is too great a thing for that | I |
The spark divine dwells in each soul and we | J |
Can fan it to a steady flame of light | K |
Whose lustre guilds the pathway of the tomb | L |
And shines on through eternity or else | M |
Neglect it till it simmers down to death | N |
And leaves us but the darkness of the grave | O |
Each conquered passion feeds the living flame | P |
Each well borne sorrow is a step toward God | Q |
Faith cannot rescue and no blood redeem | R |
The soul that will not reason and resolve | S |
Lean on thyself yet prop thyself with prayer | T |
For these are spirits messengers of light | K |
Who come at call and fortify thy strength | U |
Make friends with thee and with thine inner self | V |
Cast out all envy bitterness and hate | W |
And keep the mind's fair tabernacle pure | X |
Shake hands with Pain give greeting unto Grief | Y |
Those angels in disguise and thy glad soul | Z |
From light to light from star to shining star | A2 |
