In France I Saw A Hill Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IJIJ GKGK

In France I saw a hill a gentle slopeA
Rising above old tombs to greet the gleamB
From soft spring skies Beyond these skies dwells hopeA
But those green graves bespeak a broken dreamB
-
-
There was a row of narrow beds new madeC
Each bore a starry banner and a crossD
And each the name of one who ere he playedC
His r le of warrior met earth's final lossD
-
-
They were so young so eager for the frayE
And thoughts of glory filled each boyish heartF
When over dangerous seas they sailed awayE
To face the foe and play some splendid partF
-
-
But in the tedious toil the dull routineG
Which must precede achievement on the fieldH
Disease that secret enemy with meanG
Sly tactics forced them to disarm and yieldH
-
-
So they were buried on that hill in FranceI
Before their ears had heard the battle dinJ
Before life gave them its dramatic chanceI
A lasting fame or glorious death to winJ
-
-
Yet looking up beyond their graves of greenG
I seem to see them wearing band and starK
Men are rewarded in the Worlds UnseenG
Not for the way they die but what they areK
