I sit in the twilight dimA
At the close of an idle dayB
And I list to the soft sweet hymnA
That rises far awayB
And dies on the evening airC
Oh all day longD
They sing their songD
Who toil in the valley thereC
-
But never a song sing IE
Sitting with folded handsF
The hours pass me byE
Dropping their golden sandsF
And I list from day to dayB
To the 'tick tick tock'D
Of the old brown clockD
Ticking my life awayB
-
And I see the twilight fadeG
And I see the night come onH
And then in the gloom and shadeG
I weep for the day that's goneI
Weep and wail in painJ
For the misspent dayB
That has flown awayB
And will not come againK
-
Another morning beamsL
And I forget the lastM
And I sit in idle dreamsL
Till the day over pastM
Oh the toiler's heart is gladN
When the day is goneI
And the night comes onH
But mine is sore and sadN
-
For I dare not look behindO
No shining golden sheavesP
Can I ever hope to findO
Nothing but withered leavesP
Ah dreams are very sweetQ
But will not pleaseR
If only theseR
I lay at the Master's feetQ
-
And what will the Master sayB
To dreams and nothing moreS
Oh idler all the dayB
Think ere thy life is o'erT
And when the day grows lateU
Oh soul of sinV
Will He let you inV
There at the pearly gateU
-
Oh idle heart bewareC
On to the field of strifeW
On to the valley thereC
And live a useful lifeW
Up do not wait a dayB
For the old brown clockD
With its 'tick tick tock '-
Is ticking your life awayB
