AHASUERASA
-
What were thy thoughts sweet Esther Something passedB
Across thy face that for a moment veiledC
Thy soul from mine and left me desolateD
Thy thoughts were not of meE
-
ESTHERF
-
Ay ALL of theeE
I wondered if in truth thou wert contentG
With me thy choice Was there no other oneH
Of all who passed before thee at thy courtI
Whose memory pursues thee with regretJ
-
AHASUERASA
-
I do confess I much regret that dayK
And wish I could relive itL
-
ESTHERF
-
Oh My lordM
-
AHASUERASA
-
Yea I regret those hours I wasted onN
The poor procession that preceded theeE
Hadst thou come first then all the added wealthO
-
Of one long day of loving thee were mineP
A boundless fortune squandered Though I liveQ
To three score years and ten as I do hopeR
In wedded love beside thee that one dayK
Was filched from me and cannot be restoredM
-
ESTHERF
-
And then to think how frightened and abashedS
I hung outside thy gates from early mornT
Not daring to go in and meet thine eyesA
Till pitying twilight clothed me in her veilU
And evening walked beside me to thy doorV
-
AHASUERASA
-
So it was thou fair thief who stole that dayK
And made me poorer by how many hoursA
-
ESTHERF
-
Full eight I think They seemed a hundred thenW
And now time flies a hundred times too fastB
-
AHASUERASA
-
Then eight more kisses do I claim from theeE
This very hour first tithes of many dueX
I shall exact these payments as I willY
And if they be not ready on demandZ
I'll lock thee in the prison of my armsA
Like this and take them so and so and soA
-
ESTHERF
-
But kings must think of other things than loveA2
And live for other aims than happinessA
I would not drag thee from thy altitudeB2
Of mighty ruler and great conquerorF
To chain thee by my sideC2
-
AHASUERASA
-
Such slaveryE
Would please me better than to conquer earthD2
Without thee Esther I have stood on heightsA
And heard the cheers of multitudes belowA
Have known the loneliness of being greatE2
Now let me live and love thee like a manF2
Forgetting I am kingG2
I am contentG
-
ESTHERF
-
Content is not the pathway to great deedsA
As man I hold thee higher than all kingsA
As king thou must stand higher than all menW
In other eyes Let no one say of meE
'She spoiled his greatness by her littlenessA
She made a languorous lover of a kingG2
And silenced war cries on commanding lipsA
With honeyed kisses made her woman's armsA
Preferred to armour and her couch to tentsA
Until the kingdom with no guiding handZ
Plunged down to ruin '-
-
AHASUERASA
-
Thou wouldst have me goA
So soon thy heart hath weariedH2
-
ESTHERF
-
My heart is bursting with its love for theeE
Canst thou not feel its fervour But great menW
Need wiser guidance than a woman's heartI2
My pride in thee is equal to my loveA2
And I would have thee greater than thou artI2
Ay greater than all other men on earthD2
Though forced long years to feed my hungry heartI2
On food of memories and wine of tearsA
Wert thou but winning glory and renownJ2
-
AHASUERASA
-
Thou art most noble Esther thou art fitL
To be the consort of a king of kingsA
But I have chewed upon ambition's husksA
And starved for love through all my manhood's yearsA
And now the mighty gods have seen it fitL
To spread love's banquet and to name thee hostK2
May I not feast my fill O Esther takeL2
The tempting nectar of those lips awayK
And give me wine to rouse the brute in meE
To make me thirst for blood instead of loveA2
Wine Wine I sayK
-
ESTHERF
-
Ahasueras waitE2
Methinks good music is wine turned to soundM2
Here comes thy minstrel with an offeringG2
Pressed from the ripened fruit of my fond heartI2
Mine own the words and mine the melodyE
And may it linger longer in thine earN2
Than on thy lip would stay the taste of wineP
Sing onN
-
MINSTRELO2
-
When from the field returningG2
Love is a warrior's yearningG2
Love in his heart is burningG2
Love is his dreamP2
Talk not to him of gloryE
Speak not of faces goryE
Sing of love's tender storyE
Make it thy themeP2
Sing of his lady's tressesA
Sing of the smile that blessesA
Sing of the sweet caressesA
And yet againW
Sing of fair children's facesA
Sing of the dear home gracesA
Sing till the vacant placesA
Ring with thy strainQ2
Yet as the days go speedingG2
Shall he arise unheedingG2
Love songs or words of pleadingG2
Strong in his mightR2
Helmet and armour wearingG2
Hies he to deeds of daringG2
Forth to the battle faringG2
Back to the fightR2
Sing now of ranks contendingG2
Sing of loud voices blendingG2
Sing of great warriors sendingG2
Death to their foesA
Sing of war missiles hummingG2
Strike into martial drummingG2
Sing of great victory comingG2
As forth he goesA
Back to the battle faringG2
Back into deeds of daringG2
Back to the fightR2
-
AHASUERASA
-
No less a lover but a greater manF2
A better warrior and a nobler kingG2
I will be from this hour for thy dear sakeG2
